Ever gone to a seminar or a big conference and there's one or two speakers there who really make your pen fly? And by that I mean you're frantically scribbling notes catching the gold nuggets they're dropping on you. It's happened to me twice in the past 4 days. And I'm not one to shower praise on speakers because, quite frankly, there aren't that many out there with an original idea. (I'll admit it, my ideas aren't THAT original: save money, make your time more valuable, make helping other people the center of your networking. It's not like I'm developing new strains of bacteria to prevent Tourettes Syndrome.) But sometimes you hear a speaker and their words haunt you for the next several days, and if you're lucky weeks or months. On Friday, I caught Scott Ginsberg's presentation to the YPIowa Conference. Scott is known as The Name Tag Guy. He wears a nametag 24-7 and has for the past 10 years or more. To describe him aptly, you could say he lives his brand. To say he's committed doesn't adequately describe him. I mean, c'mon, the dude has a tattoo of his nametag on his chest! I know Andy Drish caught some of the messages as he was sitting at my table. So were Tim Paluch, Shane Reiser, and Liz Nead. I don't know what they took away, but here were the nuggets I got: - Be a living brochure for your own awesomeness
- Writing is the basis of all wealth
- Do people hear from you or about you?
- Consistency is far better than rare moments of greatness
- Ideas are free -- Execution is priceless
A couple of these are the reason I'm writing this now, the reason I got up to exercise the past two mornings, and the reason you (or your company) will soon hire me to speak. (That was subliminal.) The other speaker you're going to have to wait on. I have lots more writing to do and my kids will be up soon. Savvy?
