Success Is About Four Things: Money, Time, Relationships, and Service

Success Is About Four Things: Money, Time, Relationships, and Service

A wise man once told me that we all have just Four Legacies to leave future generations. The first legacy is Financial Freedom. This involves spending less than you make, investing the balance, and creating a bigger life, not necessarily a bigger lifestyle. The second legacy is Time Freedom or the ability to take time for yourself and others. This leads to the third legacy which is Relationship Freedom and the desire to build solid, long-lasting, engaged relationships. And lastly, the first three can’t help but lead to Service Freedom – and we’re all here to be of service to one another. Let’s get started...

Money Freedom

Money Freedom

Money Freedom is elusive for most people. It’s because society has taught us to want everything we want, and believe that we can have it right away. We’re a 24-easy monthly payment society and it’s the root cause of the economy today. Money Freedom doesn’t have to be elusive... in fact, it can be closer than you think. The key is playing the game we all play with money by the rules of winners, not of losers. It’s about changing your mindset. Ready to play The Money Game to win?

Time Freedom

Time Freedom

Time Freedom is more than how many days off a year do you have. It’s about having the ability to create efficiencies within your life that allow you more free time to do what you wish. It’s about realizing that there are aspects of what you do that you can outsource to other people and new technologies. And most importantly, time freedom allows you to pursue what you really, really deep down want to do. And what might that be...?

Relationship Freedom

Relationship Freedom

Relationship Freedom at its’ core is adding more value to other people than you can possibly ever expect to get in return. It’s the philosophies behind books like The Go-Giver, Never Eat Alone, and How To Win Friends And Influence People. And at the heart of Relationship Freedom is a P.O.W.E.R. that most people never get to fully access. Give me one hour of your time and you’ll know exactly how to access it...

Service Freedom

Service Freedom

Service Freedom is a very simple concept. It’s the idea that we are all placed on this earth to be of service to one another in some way. While it’s true that each of us has a very unique set of skills, interests, hobbies, and values, our uniqueness is the gateway to help other people achieve everything they want to achieve. The challenge is achieving the first three legacies in order to live in Service Freedom forever. Those that do, never ever want for money, time, or relationships. Interested...?

I had the good fortune to speak at Start Up Weekend Des Moines held at The Impromptu Studios downtown (run by the one and only Dan Shipton).  Shane Reiser was the go-to guy who helped set everything up and did a fantastic job.

I also met Clint Nelson of Start Up Weekend, an entrepreneurs entrepreneur if I ever met one.  It was he and his business partner's foresight that has created literally hundreds of start up businesses over the past few years.

What struck me as particularly interesting was the fervor at which the teams were working.  It was a quiet but intense calm as every member of the team had their task to do and went about doing it with such focus and determination.  Think about what they're undertaking -- in 3 days, the teams (many of whom know no one else on their team) take an idea to a product or service offering using nothing but their own know-how.  It's an awesome example of the entrepreneurial spirit in the US.

If you've ever told yourself, "I can't start a business" consider participating in the next Start Up Weekend.  The words "I can't" will be forever removed from your vocabulary.

True story.

Waking Up From Autopilot PDF Print E-mail

When I was going through hypnosis training, I became familiar with the four levels of brain wave activity: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta.

Beta is an active, walking, talking brain wave.  I hope you're in it now.

Alpha is entry-level hypnosis, a semi-conscious state where the subconscious mind is easily accessed.  We go through alpha at least twice a day, when we are waking up and when we are going to sleep.  There are other times, and I'll talk about that shortly.

Theta is a deep hypnotic state and is created with very long slow arching brain waves.

Delta is post-turkey dinner, near tryptophan induced coma where Uncle Frank passes out in the Lazy Boy with his hand in his pants.  (Or something like that... I don't remember... think I was hypnotized at the time).

The other times you may find yourself in the Alpha brain wave are when you're driving and can't remember the majority of the trip, when you're staring at the television and the commercials are being beamed into your brain, and when you're listening to someone drone on in the seat next to you on an airplane flight to Boston... or at least, that's when I do.

If you've ever woken from one of these mental snooze trips, you realize that you went away and wonder what happened while you were gone.  It's as if your body and mind have gone on autopilot and left you to play hookie for awhile.

A friend of mine was recently laid off from his job at a very large, very (seemingly) stable company with almost no warning.  He made a comment to me that he'd have to take his life off of autopilot.

Hmmm.  How many of us are living this way in a job that we think is secure, but may not be as safe as we believe?  Isn't it interesting that the idea of safety and security has been completely thrown on it's ear?  We used to take jobs at large companies because they offered us that sacred cow of security.  The pensions.  The bennies.  The free Post-it notes. (whoops, let that slip.)

Now more than ever, it's the people that are self-employed that have the tiger by the tail.  Sure, it's tough out there, but no tougher than going out and trying to find a high paying job in an economy that has shed those as if it were trying to win The Biggest Loser.

It's forced (I'll say it again... FORCED) the folks who hadn't really thought about going at it on their own to do exactly that.  And I, for one, am THRILLED!  This economy is exactly what we needed.  We needed to get back to creativity, and less is more, and networking to help each other.  Let's get back to teaching our kids how to save and invest, then spend.  Let's all get back to becoming investor/consumers and not just consumers.

The autopilot has now been disengaged.  All passengers are encouraged to leave their seats, get in the Beta brain wave, and figure out a way to get this plane home.

Rock on, America.  I know we can do it.
